Greenpoint..
I have some Polish family upstate and want to bring them back some 'Polish things'.. What do you think they'd most appreciate(things you cannot really get anywhere but in a polish neighborhood). They live in Rochester and there are a lot of polish people so maybe this isn't even that relevent, but I pretty much lost ties with my Polish heritage and am not sure which gifts they would like. I checked out a Polish chocolate store on Manhattan ave. today, is there a brand that is the best? Or other gift ideas.. Thanks!

Also.. I am looking to make friends in the neighborhood, I am 21, go to school for fashion/business, into making crafty things, etc. Anyone..?

hello everyone!

i just moved back to new york (i lived here a little over a year ago), and i'm looking for a place in the greenpoint or williamsburg areas. i've got a miniature dachshund, and my lady, and we're hoping to find something for $1050 or less. i know i won't find anything just asking here, but i wondered if anyone had any reccomendations of realtors who don't have a huge fee, or good landlords, etc.

any info on who to stay away from is useful too. i've been checking craigslist pretty much non stop, but i haven't dealt with realtors here, so i figured i'd ask. thanks for any help in advance!

(xpost, oh my gawd!)

I found this cool map showing Halloweenish events and Places. If you have a good event to promote, you can just go and add it to the map yourself. You don't have to get permission or anything.

It has goood stuff on it, like the Critical Mass Halloween bike ride.

Any suggestions what approximate price for commercial space is? I’m looking a loft in in Williamsburg-Greenpoint-Sunset Park-DAMBO. And also, perhaps, you may recommend any Real Estate/Broker who does this type of realty.

greenpoint transportation?
any suggestions on car services or other ideas how to get into the city right now? i've called all the local car services but no one's even answering their phones. i need to get to work in chinatown, which is frustrating cuz in nice weather i could just suck it up and walk across the williamsburg bridge, but its too cold right now. although i guess if theres no other option, that's what i'll do tomorrow.

any ideas would be really appreciated. i cant miss another day of work.

I am looking for an apartment so that we can stay in greenpoint...

Ideally 2 bedrooms, separate livingroom and kitchen... at least 4 rooms, for less than $1500.00 a month.

does anyone know why my apartment shakes? i live near mcgorlick park. it shakes every night. it seems kind of like a train rumble but i didn't think there was a train. i guess it could be the LIRR. it seems really odd though because it seems to only happen at night.

Dog gone it! Fotog,
pup fall down manhole

BY KERRY BURKE and LEO STANDORA
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

Walking his dog turned out to be a sinking - and stinking - experience for prominent photographer Nat Finkelstein yesterday.
His 120-pound Tibetan mastiff, Bling, fell into a Brooklyn manhole and dragged him in, too.

Bling and his 72-year-old master plunged headfirst nearly 20 feet into knee-high, foul-smelling muck, but escaped with only a few scratches.

By the time firefighters got to him 20 minutes after the fall, the feisty photographer was on his feet angrily yelling for help.

"But the first thing he said when we got him out was 'How's my dog?'" one fire official said.

Finkelstein, who worked with Andy Warhol in the '60s, has displayed his works in numerous museums here and abroad and currently. He was walking Bling near his loft in Greenpoint at 8 p.m. when the bottom fell out.

Finkelstein told authorities his big but only 11-month-old pup walked onto a manhole cover at Commercial and Clay Sts. that was so obscured by grass you couldn't tell it was askew.

Bling's weight tipped the cover off and down the doggie went, followed by Finkelstein who had the leash wrapped around his wrist.

Someone in a nearby truck yard saw what happened and dialed 911 for help.

Neighborhood youth Gabriel Vladu, 16, said a firefighter went into the hole and pulled up Bling in a harness. The pooch seemed untroubled by his experience.

"Then he brought up the man. He was covered in muck but otherwise he seemed okay, too," Gabriel said.

Later, Finkelstein was yelling for someone to call his wife as he was driven away to Bellevue Hospital for a quick checkup.

Wife Elizabeth, 30, wrapped her arms around Bling when they were reunited and told the animal, "You're such a good boy." Then she wrinkled her nose and added, "You really need a bath."

Of her husband, Elizabeth said, "I'm not worried about Nat. He's a tough guy. He'll be all right.

"I hate to sound litigious, but why was the hole uncovered?" she asked. "I can tell you Nat will be very angry about this. He doesn't take anything lying down."

Greenpoint, Brooklyn is better than Boston!
It's a taxing situation as Brooklyn poaches Southie
By Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa
Wednesday, June 1, 2005 - Updated: 02:00 AM EST

In Martin Scorsese's ``The Departed'' the role of South Boston will be played by - Brooklyn, N.Y. Does it get any worse than that?????

Filming on the set-in-Boston flick commenced over the weekend in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, where Hollywood heavy Jack Nicholson joked with onlookers and a '50s-style luncheonette stood in for a Southie diner.

``It's horrible. Just horrible,'' said Mass. Film Bureau Director Robin Dawson. ``But if anything good comes out of the situation with `The Departed,' I hope it serves as an example that tax-incentive legislation is really necessary.''

Although some filming on the flick - which stars Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg - will be done in Boston, the bulk is being shot in New York. That's because the Big Apple has enacted its ``Made In NY'' tax-incentive program that is credited with bringing $300 million in film business to the Apple so far this year, creating 6,000 jobs.

The program - which gives filmmakers a 15 percent tax break - is designed to help the state compete with Canada, which has been poaching film business for years.

On Beacon Hill, the House and Senate have similar measures pending and lawmakers say they hope to have a bill on Gov. Mitt Romney's desk by the legislative summer recess.

``There's some momentum at the moment,'' said Sen. Brian Lees, who introduced the Senate version of the tax-break package. ``There seems to be universal support.''

Dawson said she doesn't care which version gets passed, ``it's important to support any and all legislation for tax incentives,'' she said.

But Lees' bill designates Dawson as the state's official go-to person for the film industry while the House version is expected to support her rival, Mass. Sports and Entertainment Commission film czar Mark Drago.

``At some point, everyone will come together on who will be the point person,'' said Lees. ``But it's immaterial at the moment.''
In the meantime, Nicholson is having a grand old time playing a Boston Irish mob boss in NYC.

``I've been looking for a bad guy,'' he told the New York Daily News. ``I just did three comedies.''
